Keynote and Breakout Session Descriptions

Keynote – “The Innovator’s Mindset" - Presenter: George Couros 

Carol Dweck’s work has focused on the ideas of “fixed” and “growth” mindset, yet educators will need to go a step further with these notions to create the learning opportunities and that our students and schools deserve. We need to focus not only what we know, but what we do with what we know. In this talk, George will discuss the idea and characteristics of “The Innovator’s Mindset” (as discussed in the book of the same title), and share powerful examples on why this is so crucial for all educators. George’s presentations are known to be emotional, humorous, all while pushing your thinking, and will definitely connect to your heart first, in a way that will last with you long after this keynote

• “Laying the Foundation: What is Mindfulness and Self- Care for Educators”
  

Presenter(s):  Dr. Jacqueline E. Ash (Principal), Ms. Joanne Doyle, Teacher (Charles E. Shea High School and Mrs. Shara Plynton, Social Worker (Slater Middle School). This session will result in participants understanding:

1. What mindfulness is and what the mindfulness movement has to do with education
2. The science behind mindfulness and the connection to SEL
3. Why self-care is important in the school setting
4. Resources and practices

•  “Practical High Yield Visible Learning Strategies to Increase Student Achievement”
  

Presenter(s): Tracey McGee - Principal and Gino Sangiuliano- Assistant Principal) – (Hampden Meadows Schools- Barrington), Paula Morrissette (Math Department Head and LEAPP Coordinator and Eliza Pyliotis- Math Department teacher and LEAPP Coordinator (Barrington High School)

This session will focus on the highly relevant research of John Hattie. Practices discussed and modeled will include but not be limited to:

1. Goal-setting
2. Class progress monitoring data, 
3. Individual progress monitoring data binders
4. “I Can” statements 
5. Mission Statements
6. Formative Assessment (consensograms, plus minus delta)
7. PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act)
8. Act cycle and Progress Monitoring for walk- through teams

• “Developing Your Parent Community” 
  

Presenter: Christine Handy (NASSP) 

Participants will walk away with a personalized action plan that can be immediately used with the parent community. 

• “Your Digital Footprint”
  

 Presenter: George Couros

We all have a digital footprint, as do our schools and organizations. “Googling” ourselves makes this apparent whether we have had any say in it or not. As individuals and as schools, what can we do to actually shape this footprint? With open sharing of our learning, a digital footprint can easily be developed for an individual, school or organization. This is not about branding as much as it is about modeling for our students that we are learners along with them.

• “Five Leadership “Must Dos” to Improve RTI Outcomes for Your Lowest 25%” (RTI/MTSS Innovation) 
  

Presenter(s): Nicole Bucka, RTI Coordinator, Cumberland Public Schools and Dr. Jason Masterson, Principal, McCourt Middle School This session will focus on Data Use, Evidence Based Practices, Systems Leadership. 

Attendees will:

1. Apply understanding of five common systems’ challenges to their own context 
2. Evaluate if their system also struggles with these challenges
3. Collaborate and discuss potential solutions

This session will focus on School-Wide Implementation of Personalized Learning. Attendees at the session will:

1. Strengthen their understanding of key tenets of personalized learning and some of the core elements for a plan for school-wide implementation, as told by school leaders themselves. 
2. They can expect to take away knowledge around directions and avenues to explore as they consider personalized learning in their own schools and districts. 

• “Talk the Walk: Discussing Education with American Public”
  

Presenter: Bob Farrace, Director of Public Affairs, NASSP

This session will focus on education communications. Attendees will gain:

1. Knowledge of research on cultural models of education, and ability to apply that research to begin constructive education conversations.
2. Ability to convert examples into stories so messages are retained
