| Adopt-a-Plant |
The Adopt a Plant for your Classroom campaign officially kicks off the GEF Green Thumb Challenge program during National Green Week 2010. NASA research recommends one houseplant per every 100 square feet of living space to purify the air and reduce indoor pollution. Your school will receive a 50% off coupon for an indoor plant at Lowe's, and will be provided with adoption papers via the Green Thumb Challenge website. | Waste-Free Snacks |
Students nationwide will participate in the largest school based waste-reduction program in history by pledging to carry their drinks and snacks in reusable containers for one week. Please note: Make sure students measure your schools snack trash prior to sending out the program letter to families so that you have accurate pre-weights, learn more. If your school cannot participate during the designated time period (Feb. 1-5) then simply choose another week for your waste-reduction program before April 13, 2010. Keep a record of your weight measurements as GEF will be sending out a survey to all participants to determine the nationwide total. The combined totals from participating schools will be tallied and posted on the GEF website on Earth Day 2010 (April 22)! To educate and inspire your students have them watch the Fisher School Video!

GEF has announced the winners of the Green Thumb Challenge early registration raffle! Five schools have won sets of 30 IXG Green Packs, and 20 schools and youth groups have won garden starter kits to jumpstart their gardens this spring, courtesy of Ames True Temper, Central Garden and Pet, and Costa Farms. Garden kits include: hand tools and gloves, rakes and hoes, watering cans, steel wheelbarrows, organic garden control products, a variety of planters, rain gauges, and vegetable and wildflower seed packets along with canvas bags to carry supplies.
