United We Serve

Let's Read. Let's Move.

Summer is a time for fun - but it is also the time when many young people lose what they learned during the school year and pick up unhealthy eating habits. Let's Read. Let's Move. seeks to combat childhood obesity and summer reading loss by engaging youth in summer reading and physical activity, as well as by providing access to healthy, affordable food. This initiative is an Administration-wide effort led by the Corporation for National and Community Service in collaboration with First Lady Michelle Obama and five other federal agencies.

Youth Service America is joining United We Serve by asking our partners, grantees, advocates, and friends to engage young people in service around issues of the health and education of themselves and their peers.

Ten Let's Read. Let's Move Project Ideas
  1. Encourage a child to meet the President's Active Lifestyle Challenge
  2. Organize a book drive
  3. Create a community garden
  4. Build or rehab a playground
  5. Clear a walking trail
  6. Sponsor a sports tournament or camp for kids
  7. Read to kids - reading five books over the summer prevents summer learning loss - it's that easy.
  8. Conduct summer feeding program outreach
  9. Collect and donate fresh produce from a local farm
  10. Organize a back to school supplies drive

Ten More Cities Receive Cities of Service Leadership Grants
Ten cities were selected to receive a $200,000 grant over two years, funded jointly by the Rockefeller Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies, to hire a Chief Service Officer - a senior city official who will develop and implement a citywide plan to increase volunteerism and target volunteers to address their city's greatest needs. U.S. Education Secretary Urges Service Leaders to Help Remake American Education
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan challenged service leaders to join him in remaking America's education system during a panel discussion at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service yesterday, stressing the urgency and courage needed to ensure that every child receives a high-quality education that prepares him or her for the future. Duncan asked attendees to use service to foster education reform and achieve greater results for students in four areas: increased learning time, parental engagement, teacher recruiting, and turning around our lowest performing schools.  "No matter what your race, your creed or your zip code, every child is entitled to a quality public education," Duncan said. "Education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity and success. It is actually a prerequisite to success." Each year, 1.2 million kids drop out of high school, but 2,000 high schools produce half of the nation's dropouts. Secretary Duncan's speech will be archived in the next few days at www.ed.gov/news/speeches

Corporate Pro-Bono Volunteering Campaign Tops $500 Million
Corporation for National and Community Service CEO Patrick Corvington announced more than $110 million in new corporate pro bono commitments to help nonprofits achieve greater scale, sustainability, and impact in meeting community needs. The new pro bono pledges put the agency's Billion + Change campaign above the half billion mark and reflects the growing recognition from both the nonprofit and corporate sectors of the strategic benefit of the pro bono model, which engages skilled employees in using their professional expertise to help nonprofits grow and expand their impact. Companies or organizations making new Billion + Change commitments include Walmart, Microsoft, Capitol One, Ernst & Young LLP, and UPS. The pro bono services their employees will provide range from offering legal assistance to domestic violence survivors to teaching financial literacy to logistical support in the wake of natural disasters. Read about the new commitments at: www.nationalservice.gov/about/newsroom/releases_detail.asp?tbl_pr_id=1793

Grant Reviewers Needed
Youth Service America is seeking individuals to read, evaluate, and score grant proposals during July 16th - 22rd. These grants are awarded to educators, community based organizations and youth to fund youth-led service and service-learning projects. Volunteer reviewers will receive orientation of the online grant review process which will allow them to review remotely from the comfort of their own homes or offices. This is a great opportunity for college students, working professionals, volunteers and service corps groups (age 18+) to learn about the grant scoring and grant making process, YSA's programs, youth service, and how youth are proposing to change their communities! While not a requirement, familiarity or background in the grant-making process, youth service field, volunteering, or service-learning is helpful. To serve as a reviewer, you must sign up for a training session on Thursday July 8, at 4pm EST or Tuesday July 15, at 7pm EST. Volunteer reviewers must be available to review approximately 12 grants between Friday, July 16, and Thursday, July 22nd. Each proposal should take you less than half an hour to review.  Sign up at: http://tinyurl.com/2ejs634

STEMester of Service Grants
(Deadline: July 15)

Youth Service America is accepting applications for the second year of STEMester of Service.  Funded by Learn and Serve America, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, STEMester of Service incorporates YSA's semester-long service-learning framework to engage educators and students in addressing critical environmental needs and connecting them to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curricula. YSA is seeking middle schools with large populations of disadvantaged youth; STEM schools must be located in one of the 19 states with highest dropout rates (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wyoming). The $5,000 grant (that includes travel and training at YSA's Youth Service Institute in Detroit in October) supports teachers as they engage local partners and guide students in addressing local needs through planning and implementing sustainable service projects that launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 17, 2011) and culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17, 2011). www.ysa.org/grants/stem

NEW ELIGIBLE STATES: The STEMester of Service grant program targets states with the highest dropout rates. Based on the most recent dropout rate data released last week, YSA has added 7 states to the list of eligible states, including: the District of Columbia, California, Hawaii, Michigan, Montana, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. Middle schools in these states, in addition to those in the original 12 states, are eligible.

PROFILES IN SERVICE
YOUTH VOLUNTEERS HONORED AT NATIONAL SERVICE CONFERENCE

Learn and Serve America Spirit of Service Award
The Corporation for National and Community Service presented three outstanding volunteers with the "Spirit of Service Award" at its National Conference on Volunteering and Service. The awards are given annually to individuals representing each of the Corporation's three national service programs - Learn and Serve America, AmeriCorps, and Senior Corps - who have performed exemplary service in their communities.

Janis Klein-Young - Miami, FL
Janis Klein-Young has taught fine arts for 35 years with the Young Men's Academy at MacArthur South, a 6th-12th grade alternative school in Miami, FL for young men who have been expelled from the traditional classroom. With funding from Florida Learn & Serve, Janis designed and executed an arts-based service learning project at MacArthur South in 2002 that has expanded into a nationally recognized program and model. As part of the program, students work each week learning indigenous arts/crafts techniques like painting, sculpture, ceramics, ornaments, batik, and woodwork from local artists at ArtSouth in the Homestead Community. The students then teach their newly acquired skills to local seniors and elementary students who are immobile due to handicap. The students also conduct community, cultural, and arts events in Homestead; provide tours of ArtSouth; and create public murals, passing on the fruits of service to the broader community.

generationOn's Hasbro Community Action Awards

Points of Light Institute's generationOn  honored inspirational achievements of young people who have significantly transformed communities for the better.

Alexandria Segovia, 16, is one of six amazing children who were named inaugural Hasbro Community Action Hero award winners. Alexandria, a junior CERT, has trained another 35 teens in emergency response, has completed more than 500 hours of service through the HandsOn Miami action center, and personally calls and emails elected state official
s before each of its annual service days.  Florida Senator Dan Gerber attended her Global Youth Service Day project in April as a result of her persistence. Alexandria is community services chairperson for her school PTSA and facilitates classes to teach her peers the benefits of civic engagement.

Faith Nelson, 10, of Greensboro, NC, who plays a pivotal role at the Cougar Kids Care Club in Greensboro, NC, where she has helped establish a recycling program, fed six families for Thanksgiving, and collected 1,000 cans in a food drive. She has also played a role in providing weekly treats for teachers and participated in a four-hour vow of silence to honor children silenced by poverty.

JT Eden, 7, moved to San Carlos, CA, and immediately began a service club for his second-grade classmates, which they named Planet Protectors. It raised $1,200 for the Red Cross and created packages of needed items for Marines in Afghanistan.

Cole Layman, 12, founded the Paws for Peace Kids Care Club in Tampa, FL,and then moved and established a Random Acts of Kindness week at his new school in Virginia. He also helps younger students who need academic and social support.

Shaeli Marie Funk, 11, of Jackson, WY, collects gently-used items to donate each month to nonprofits, and filled 92 stockings during the holidays for a nursing home. With the "Under the Stairs" club she started, she and others collect stuffed animals for police and firefighters to give to children in times of crisis.

Hannah Salwen of Atlanta, when she was 14, saw a homeless man next to an expensive car. She wondered at the inequity in resources. Hannah eventually convinced her family to sell their large home, move to a smaller one, and donate half the sales price to charity. The family ended up contributing $800,000 to fight poverty in Africa, working with the Hunger Project.

TOOLS, TRAINING, RESOURCES & RESEARCH
Transforming Communities through Service: A Collection of 52 of the Most Innovative AmeriCorps State Programs in the United States
Innovations in Civic Participation (ICP) and America's Service Commissions (ASC) collaborated on a second edition of our 2005 publication "Transforming Communities through Service: A Collection of 52 of the Most Innovative AmeriCorps Programs in the United States."  ICP and ASC revisited the publication to explore today's innovative programs especially given the recent surge of interest in national service in the US. Many existing AmeriCorps*State programs have been lauded as highly successful and innovative, yet this information is not widely shared. This type of intentional program study on a nationwide level will serve to inform state service commissions, practitioners, policy makers and donors of the highly successful and/or innovative programs occurring around the country. The publication is available online at www.icicp.org and www.statecommissions.org, and hard copies can be requested from ICP or ASC.
