What Are States’ Requirements for General Education Teachers Teaching Students with Disabilities?
Wednesday, July 14, 2010
12:00 - 1:00 PM EDT
HOSTED BY
Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and IslandsOVERVIEW
In this webinar, REL-NEI researchers present findings from an upcoming Issues & Answers Report “Preparing General Education Teachers to Teach Students with Disabilities: Certification Requirements,” which examines how Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and the U.S. Virgin Islands prepare their general education teachers to teach students with disabilities. Researchers have identified eight content areas that these states and territories require teachers to study, including growth and development of exceptional children (required in seven jurisdictions), instructional design (required in five jurisdictions), and adapting, differentiating, accommodating, or modifying instruction (required in five of the jurisdictions).PRESENTERS

A webinar is typically an interactive 60- to 90-minute presentation of PowerPoint slides and audio viewed in real-time over the Internet. Participants experience the event by logging on through their computer and connecting to a conference call with their telephone. No travel involved! During the session, participants view slides and use a chatroom, similar to instant messaging, to communicate with one another and ask questions of presenters.
REL-NEI Webinars provide an interactive forum for state education agencies, superintendents, principals, district-level specialists, association heads, state legislatures, teachers unions, and parent associations seeking applied education research to make policy and practice decisions leading to improved student achievement and reduced performance gaps. These free sessions not only present findings but place a special emphasis on connecting applied education research to the work of field practitioners.
